What Are CMAT, MAT and XAT?

CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) is a national-level exam conducted by the National Testing Agency, mandatory for admission to AICTE-approved MBA and PGDM programmes that do not use CAT. MAT (Management Aptitude Test) is conducted by AIMA up to four times a year and is accepted by over 600 B-schools across India. Which Exam Is the Toughest?

XAT is generally considered the toughest of the three because of its unique Decision Making section, which tests judgement in ambiguous business situations rather than pure aptitude, and its unpredictable cutoffs. CMAT and MAT are closer to each other in difficulty and are considered more approachable for students also preparing for CAT, since the question types overlap significantly.

How Should You Plan Which Exams to Take?

Most serious MBA aspirants take CAT as the primary exam and add CMAT and XAT as backups, since all three fall in December and January and require limited extra preparation once CAT prep is done. MAT's four sittings a year make it a low-risk addition, since a poor attempt can simply be repeated in the next cycle without losing an admission season.
