Overview

The paper is objective and multiple-choice and is built on mathematics and aptitude rather than on programming. The mathematics portion draws on topics from higher secondary and undergraduate study, including algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, probability and statistics, while the aptitude portion tests logical and analytical reasoning. Prior knowledge of a programming language is not assumed, which is why graduates from science, commerce and other backgrounds who have studied mathematics are able to attempt it. Results are published as ranks, after which the board runs online counselling in which candidates register, fill choices of institution, and receive allotments over successive rounds, followed by reporting and document verification at the allotted college. The mode of the examination, the number of questions, the duration and the marking scheme, including any negative marking, are stated in the board's information bulletin.
