Overview

The papers are objective and multiple choice, and the areas assessed generally include English language and comprehension, general knowledge and current affairs, reasoning both logical and analytical, and legal aptitude or awareness of basic legal principles, with the postgraduate version testing core law subjects instead. Candidates apply online to the office of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, appear on the announced date, and then take part in the centralised allotment where they register options for colleges and courses. Allotment proceeds in rounds on the basis of rank, reservation, communal and special category claims, and the seat matrix published for the year. Government law colleges, university departments and participating self financing institutions are covered by the process. The exact number of questions, the duration, the marking scheme, negative marking and the syllabus outline are set out in the prospectus issued with each notification, and that prospectus is what candidates should study.
