The NEET cutoff 2026 has two layers: the qualifying percentile set by NTA, which is the 50th percentile for general category and the 40th for reserved categories, and the far higher admission cutoff at which individual colleges actually fill seats. Qualifying only makes you eligible for counselling; a government MBBS seat in the open category usually needs a score well above 600 out of 720.
What Is the NEET Qualifying Cutoff?
NEET is a 720-mark exam with 180 questions across Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology, each carrying 4 marks with a penalty of 1 mark per wrong answer. To qualify, a general category candidate must score at or above the 50th percentile of all test takers. For SC, ST and OBC candidates the bar is the 40th percentile, and for general-PwD it is the 45th percentile.
Because it is a percentile, the qualifying mark shifts every year with the difficulty of the paper and the number of candidates. In recent years the general qualifying range has been roughly 137 to 164 marks, and the reserved category range roughly 107 to 129 marks. Qualifying puts you on the merit list; it does not guarantee a seat.
How Are Admission Cutoffs Different From Qualifying Marks?
Admission cutoffs are the closing All India Rank or score at which the last seat in a college was filled during counselling. They are decided by demand, not by NTA. A top government college like AIIMS Delhi or Maulana Azad Medical College closes within the first few hundred ranks, while a state government college in a smaller city may close at a rank of 20,000 or more in the state quota.
- Qualifying cutoff: set by NTA, a percentile, the same for everyone in a category
- Admission cutoff: set by demand, a closing rank, different for every college and quota
- All India Quota: 15% of government seats, filled by MCC counselling on All India Rank
- State Quota: 85% of government seats, filled by state counselling on state rank
What Score Is Needed for a Government MBBS Seat?
The table below gives indicative ranges based on recent counselling rounds. Treat them as a planning guide, because a slightly harder or easier paper moves every number.
How Do Private and Deemed College Cutoffs Work?
Private medical colleges and deemed universities fill seats at much lower scores because their fees are higher, typically ₹8 lakh to ₹25 lakh a year against under ₹1 lakh a year at a government college. Deemed university seats are allotted centrally by MCC, and state private seats through the state counselling body. Management and NRI quota seats close even lower, sometimes just above the qualifying mark, at a premium fee.
Do not equate a low closing score with poor quality; several private colleges have strong faculty and hospitals. Compare the total five-and-a-half-year cost, NMC recognition status and internship hospital before deciding.
How Does the All India Rank Map to a Seat?
Your NEET scorecard shows an overall All India Rank and a category rank. In MCC counselling for the 15% All India Quota, deemed universities, central institutes and AIIMS, the AIR is what matters. In state counselling, each state prepares its own merit list from NEET scores of its domicile candidates, so your state rank is far better than your AIR. Always check both, and use the previous year's round-wise closing ranks for your target colleges when filling choices.
- Check AIR for MCC choices: AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities, deemed universities, AIQ seats
- Check state rank for the 85% state quota in your domicile state
- Compare Round 1, Round 2 and mop-up closing ranks; later rounds often close lower
What Should You Do After the Result?
Register for MCC counselling and your state counselling in parallel, since the schedules overlap. Keep the NEET scorecard, 10th and 12th certificates, domicile, category and identity documents ready, and shortlist 40 to 60 colleges across tiers. Use our medical college listings to compare fees and seats, review the NEET exam page for dates, and confirm the official cutoff on the NTA NEET website.
