Applicants are normally expected to hold a master's degree in law, or in a related social science discipline where the proposed research is interdisciplinary, from a recognised university, with the aggregate the university prescribes and the relaxation given to reserved categories. Selection runs through a written entrance test on research methodology and the chosen subject area, followed by an interview at which the candidate defends a written research proposal; candidates holding a valid UGC-NET or an equivalent fellowship may be exempted from the written stage. Seats depend on supervisor availability in the proposed area. The qualifying marks and shortlisting rules are notified separately for each admission cycle.
