Ph.D

This is a doctoral research programme at National Law University in New Delhi, in which a scholar produces an original thesis under the guidance of a faculty supervisor rather than following a taught syllabus. The structure generally moves through coursework in research methods and legal theory, approval of a detailed research proposal, a long middle phase of doctrinal, comparative or empirical research with regular progress review, and finally submission and oral defence of the thesis. Work is possible across public law, criminal justice, human rights, international and trade law, business and financial regulation, intellectual property, environmental law and law-and-technology, subject to a supervisor being available in that area. The programme suits candidates preparing for academic careers, for research and policy roles in institutions and regulators, or for specialised consultancy. Being in New Delhi gives access to courts, government departments, archives and research libraries useful for both textual and field-based projects.
