The MPH course in India is a 2-year Master of Public Health that trains graduates to prevent disease and improve health at the population level through epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and programme management. It is open to graduates from medicine, allied health, life sciences and social sciences, and leads to roles in government health programmes, NGOs, research institutes and international agencies.
What Is a Master of Public Health?
Public health focuses on communities rather than individual patients. An MPH teaches how diseases spread, how to measure health in populations, how to design and evaluate programmes such as immunisation or tuberculosis control, and how health systems are financed and governed. It is a multidisciplinary degree, and classes usually mix doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, biologists and social science graduates.
Who Is Eligible for an MPH in India?
- Bachelor's degree in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% to 55% at most institutes
- Preferred backgrounds: MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, life sciences, social sciences, statistics
- Some institutes give weightage or reserved seats to medical graduates
- Work experience is preferred at a few institutes but rarely compulsory
Which Institutes Offer the Best MPH Programmes?
Several state universities, medical colleges and private universities also run MPH programmes with fees between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh for the full course.
What Does the MPH Curriculum Cover?
The course runs over 4 semesters. The first year covers core subjects: epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioural sciences, environmental health, health policy and management, and research methods. The second year adds electives such as health economics, nutrition, maternal and child health, infectious disease control or health informatics, followed by a field placement or internship of 2 to 3 months and a dissertation based on primary or secondary data.
- Semester 1 and 2: core epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems, research methods
- Semester 3: electives and specialisation tracks
- Semester 4: field practicum and dissertation
What Is the Career Scope After an MPH?
India's public health workforce is expanding through the National Health Mission, disease surveillance programmes, urban health missions and state public health cadres. MPH graduates work as programme officers, epidemiologists, monitoring and evaluation specialists, health economists and researchers.
- Government: National Health Mission, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, state health departments, NCDC
- NGOs and foundations: PATH, Jhpiego, CARE, Population Foundation of India, Tata Trusts
- International agencies: WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, Gates Foundation projects
- Research: ICMR institutes, universities, clinical research organisations
- Private sector: hospital chains, health insurance, health-tech companies, consulting
Starting salaries range from about ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh a year for non-medical graduates and higher for MBBS holders with an MPH, and senior roles in international agencies pay considerably more. Doctors who add an MPH often move into administration, policy or global health careers.
How Do You Apply?
Most institutes conduct their own written entrance test covering general aptitude, basic biology and current health affairs, followed by an interview. Applications typically open between January and April for a July or August start. Explore public health and allied courses, compare institutes offering MPH, and review the national programme priorities on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare website.
