The paper is built on the school syllabus up to class 10 and tests mathematics, physics and chemistry, with the questions set at the level expected of a candidate who has just completed secondary school. All questions are objective, and the marking scheme, including any negative marking, is stated in the board's information brochure. Ranks from the examination feed into online counselling conducted by the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board, through which candidates are allotted seats in diploma programmes across government polytechnics, private polytechnics and other approved institutions in the state. Some non-engineering diploma streams may also be filled through the same process where notified. The number of questions, duration, medium of the paper, examination centres and the counselling stages are published in the official brochure for each session, and candidates should verify the current pattern there rather than relying on earlier years.
