TOEIC Exam Pattern Overview

The TOEIC exam has four test types: Listening and Reading, Speaking and Writing, the 4-Skills Test, and the Bridge Test. TOEIC Listening and Reading Test Format

This test is conducted in pen and paper based mode. It has two sections: Listening Test and Reading Test. All questions are multiple choice type. Both sections carry 100 questions each.

The test has to be attempted in 2 hours or 1 hour. Each section has a fixed time limit.

The Speaking and Writing test has 19 questions total. The duration is 1 hour 20 minutes. There is no negative marking.

TOEIC Bridge Test Format

The TOEIC Bridge test is allocated 60 minutes. It contains 50 multiple choice questions grouped into 4 parts for listening, and 50 questions grouped into 3 parts for the reading section.

The TOEIC Bridge speaking test includes 8 questions grouped into 6 task types. The writing section contains 9 questions grouped into 5 task types. The Bridge test is available in paper-and-pencil or online mode.

Speaking Test: Test takers are checked on their speaking skills. They should speak as much as possible in the given time. They must speak clearly and make relevant sense. The speaking part lasts about 20 minutes.

  • Read a text aloud for 45 seconds after a preparation time of 45 seconds.
  • Describe a picture displayed on screen for 45 seconds. Preparation time is 30 seconds.
  • Respond to 3 questions asked by a panel. The first two questions get 15 seconds each and the third gets 30 seconds. No preparation time is given.
  • Respond to 3 questions using provided information. The first two get 15 seconds and the third gets 30 seconds. The information can be read in 30 seconds only, with no preparation time.
  • Propose a solution for a problem presented in 30 seconds. Test takers speak for 60 seconds and explain how they understand the problem and how to handle it.
  • Express an opinion on a specific topic. They speak for 60 seconds after preparing for 15 seconds.

Writing Test: Test takers answer questions that check their ability to write correctly and effectively. They must follow the given format and directions within the time limit.

  • Write a sentence each based on 5 pictures using two words or phrases given in the questions.
  • Respond to 2 written request emails in 10 minutes each, including reading time.
  • Write an essay of no less than 300 words. The essay responds to an issue in the question and explains views and a solution.

TOEIC Bridge Test Content

The Bridge test content covers listening and reading skills at a basic to intermediate level. The format is simpler than the main TOEIC Listening and Reading Test.
