The process is conducted online in notified rounds. Qualified doctors register on the state portal, pay the prescribed fee, upload documents for verification, fill and lock their choices of institution and speciality, and are allotted seats in the order of state merit within their category and quota. Allotment is followed by reporting and joining at the allotted college within the stated window, after which upgrade, mop up and stray vacancy rounds are held for seats that remain unfilled. The seats covered are the doctor of medicine, master of surgery and postgraduate diploma places in the state, together with the corresponding dental postgraduate seats where notified. Reservation, domicile, in-service quota and the bond and service conditions laid down by the West Bengal government are applied at the allotment stage rather than being decided by any examination.
