History
EPFL started as Ecole Speciale de Lausanne with 11 students. Initially, it offered courses in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Drawing, Architecture, and Civil Engineering. Students of the first batch graduated in 1855. In 1869, the school got into an affiliation with the Academie de Lausanne. It continued to grow over the coming decades. In 1969, EPFL became Switzerland's second federal institute (after ETH Zurich).
