Waseda University History

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shigenobu Okuma founded the university as the Tokyo Senmon Gakko in 1882. Around 80 students were welcomed as part of the first classes taken by the Departments of Political Science, Law, English, and Physical Sciences. The university expanded over the rest of the 19th and 20th centuries, honoring names like Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, and Herbert von Karajan, with doctorate degrees and guest lectures, along with it.
