The programmes concerned are teacher education courses that combine a subject degree with professional preparation for school teaching, so an applicant chooses the school stage and the subject specialisation intended and is examined accordingly. The national common entrance test that now selects for the integrated teacher education programme is an objective computer-based examination in which a candidate takes language papers, papers in the domain subjects relevant to the intended specialisation, and a general test that includes teaching aptitude, with the choice of papers depending on whether the candidate is heading towards a science, arts or commerce specialisation. Selection is followed by centralised counselling in which seats at the Regional Institutes and other participating institutions are allotted on merit, with regional and reservation rules applied. Postgraduate and other courses at the Regional Institutes follow the separate routes notified for them.
