The GS test is a written screening paper held in the subject stream a candidate applies for, and shortlisted candidates are then called for interviews at the relevant TIFR centre before selection is finalised. The mathematics paper covers algebra, analysis, topology and related areas; physics covers classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and mathematical methods; chemistry covers physical, organic and inorganic chemistry; computer and systems sciences covers discrete mathematics, algorithms, data structures and systems topics; and the biology stream is assessed through the joint entrance screening used by TIFR and partner biology institutions. Admission leads to programmes at the Mumbai campus and at TIFR centres and affiliated institutions including the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru, the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, the TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences in Hyderabad and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.
