The idea of the 1981 annual memorial awards found a foothold in 2006 on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the batch of 1981. The brains behind this were Mr. Gopal Rajgopalan, Mr. Ashwini Malhotra and Mr. Ashok Saraf. The sorrowful demise of two members of the batch of 1981 stoked this fire, bringing into existence the Sabeena Bakshi Award and Ram Mohan Menon Award. A tribute to the departed souls, the awards were meant to celebrate academic excellence from the first year batch of Masters in Management Studies. But unfortunately, we were left mournful hearing of the demise of Mr. Gopal Rajgopalan. This shock led the batch of 1981 to start the third award in his memory, the Gopal Rajagopalan Award for Distinction in Finance and Entrepreneurship. The batch of 1981 lost three more endearing members; they were Mr. John Samuel, Mr. Uday Kulkarni and Mr. Sudhir Yadav. This moved the batch of 1981 to rename the awards. The awards were renamed as the JBIMS 1981 Annual Memorial Awards. The awards include a plaque and cash component. The cash component is awarded from the return on investment of the corpus, built through donations from the batch of 1981 and other donors.
