About Loyola College
Loyola College in Chennai has contributed to higher education for over nine decades. The college is known as a pioneer in education and has created many innovative practices for other institutions to follow.
Autonomous Status
Loyola received autonomous status in 1978. It was one of the first eight colleges in India to get this status.
This autonomy helped the college frame its own admission policies. These policies aim to provide university education in a Christian atmosphere for deserving students, especially for Catholics, Dalits, and the underserved sections of society.
Innovative Programmes
Loyola has introduced several path-breaking programmes and courses over the years. Many other institutions have adopted these courses into their own teaching and learning environment.
One of the flagship programmes is the two-year Diploma in Visual Communication offered by the Loyola Institute of Visual Communication (LIVCOM). This was started as an evening programme in the 1970s and was the only one of its kind at the time.
Due to recognition from the media industry, the college started a full-fledged Degree in Visual Communication in 1989.
Foundation Course and School of Human Excellence
The Foundation Course is designed to inculcate values in future leaders of the nation. It emphasizes Ignatian pedagogy and spirituality.
The programme is run by an exclusive academic unit called the School of Human Excellence (SHE). This unit guides students in their values-centred pursuit of becoming men and women for and with others in society.
Research Culture
Loyola has a strong research culture. It is the only Arts and Science College that figured in Current Science magazine for research contributions to national development.
Loyola is the only Arts and Science College in India to be recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India.
Student Services
Loyola College provides a wide range of Good Samaritan services to the student community. These services are a significant contribution the college makes to higher education and society.
