About this Scholarship
The Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarships for Doctoral Studies, offered by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund (JNMF), supports Indian nationals pursuing a Ph.D. in select humanities and social-science fields. The scheme also awards a small number of scholarships to nationals of other Asian countries. Each year the Fund selects up to 18 Indian candidates across reserved and unreserved categories and offers support for a maximum of two years of doctoral research.
The eligible disciplines are Indian History & Civilization, Sociology, Comparative Studies in Religion & Culture, Economics, and Ecology & Environment. Candidates must apply through the official JNMF process; no separate NSP or NTA portal is used.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a first-class Master’s degree from a recognized Indian university and be registered or provisionally registered for a Ph.D. in one of the five listed subjects. The scheme reserves seats as follows: 6 for Unreserved, 3 for Scheduled Castes, 1 for Scheduled Tribes, 5 for Other Backward Classes, 2 for Economically Weaker Sections, and 1 for Persons with Disabilities. There is no separate income ceiling or minimum percentage beyond the first-class requirement.

Download the application form from the JNMF website or collect it in person from Teen Murti House, New Delhi. Fill in the form, attach the required certificates (Master’s degree, Ph.D. registration, caste certificate if applicable, disability certificate if applicable), and send the complete set by registered post to the JNMF office so that it reaches before the closing date. Late or incomplete applications are not considered.
