History
Karolinska Institutet was founded in 1810 by Kung Karl as an “academy for the training of skilled army surgeons”. In 1968, this institute got its name Karolinska Institutet or KI. In 1861, this institute was awarded the right to confer degrees and is granted the status as equal to the university. In 1874, KI was licensed to confer medical degrees. In 1884, Karolina Widerström became the first woman to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine from KI. Then, in 1895, Alfred Nobel's testament bequeaths KI the right to select the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
