History

Long Island University was founded in 1926 and is one of the oldest universities in the USA. Socialite and Post Cereal Company heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post lived in Hillwood from 1921 to 1951. Long Island University paid USD 200,000 for the 177-acre estate in 1951 after seeing the demand for education provided by the increasing number of suburban families. The institution was named after Marjorie's father, Charles William Post, the renowned American breakfast cereal inventor, by the university's Board of Trustees.
