East Texas A&M University History

The university operated as the East Texas Normal College for its first 28 years. It was started by William L. Mayo in 1889. In 1917, ET became a state-funded college after a bill was passed in the state legislature. It got renamed as the East Texas State Normal College and became a member of the State Normal College System. Over the coming years, it continued its expansion and in 2024, was renamed to its current name.
