UoM has a large teaching faculty of approximately 2,500 staff members, who form an enthusiastic and encouraging community of teachers, lecturers, researchers, technicians and practitioners who are united by passion for their subject area, and commitment to the success of their students.

The university's teaching ethos focuses on producing globally significant research and providing a range of services which benefit local and regional communities. Popular majors include liberal arts and humanities, kinesiology and exercise science, and nursing.

The university's successful teaching methods are built around a list of core values, which comprise accountability, collaboration, diversity and inclusion, innovation, service, and most importantly, student success. UoM prepares students to pursue meaningful career pathways in a diverse and dynamic global environment.

The university also has a superb record for delivering online education, and was recently ranked number one in the state of Tennessee for distance learning. Nearly one third of all UoM's online courses are ranked within the top 40 nationally.

The university delivers courses spanning more than 250 subject areas, as well as supporting a number of internationally significant research centres. Together, these form the academic structure of the university and are connected by a collaborative network of modules and research groups, which encourage an interdisciplinary approach to tuition and a holistic ethos toward education.

UoM offers courses at a range of academic levels and modes of study, so entry requirements differ based on these criteria as well as between individual programs.

For freshmen entry, 50 per cent of applicants submit standardized test scores between the following ranges:

  • SAT score range: 960-1200
  • ACT score range: 18-24

First-time freshman applications must compete an online form and submit the following material to the UoM admissions office:

  • A final transcript of all high school credits
  • SAT or ACT results (optional)
  • Non-refundable application fee of USD 50
  • Evidence of English language proficiency, if required (typically IELTS or TOEFL)
  • Any additional items and information requested in the application materials by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation.

Candidates are evaluated on a rolling, space-available basis, and each application is considered on its individual merits. Applications for fall admission must be made before the July 1st application deadline, and the university is moderately selective with an acceptance rate of 85 per cent.

The UoM main campus is a thriving hub of student activity, organized around purpose-designed campus infrastructure which is continually being updated and improved.

The university has taken great care to provide the very best academic facilities to students of all departments and subject areas, as well as providing plenty of opportunities for recreation and extra-curricular enrichment. Campus planners have dramatically increased the amount of open space and the number of green walkways in recent years, while preserving and celebrating the original historic architecture alongside newer, more contemporary buildings on site.

The Memphis Tigers, the university's famous sports and athletics teams, compete in the top division of college sports, and have the facilities to match. From athlete training facilities such as gyms, training fields, and physiotherapy clinics all the way up to 60,000-seat stadiums, a brand-new aquatics center and even a golf course, Memphis has it all. Facilities are available for all students to use, whether they are involved recreationally, or at an elite level.

International students attending the University of Memphis can access a range of great scholarship and funding opportunities, which can help them reduce the cost of studying and achieve their academic potential.

International Merit Scholarship

This is a competitive scholarship award which is offered to students based on their academic performance. Eligible students must be newly admitted international students, who are working towards a degree on campus and have an F-1 visa.

In order to qualify, students will need to have one of:

  • A score of 25 on the ACT, 1200 on the SAT, or equivalent
  • A 3.25 USA GPA, or equivalent

Students will need to maintain full-time credit hours, as well as minimum academic scores during their studies, to remain eligible for this award.

Memphis in May Scholarship

The Memphis in May organization and International Studies program have collaborated to offer this annual scholarship, which provides USD 1,000 for one academic year to successful applicants. It can be used to reduce study costs or fund a study abroad opportunity (subject to approval).

The new center will build on the already formidable reputation of the UoM aquatics program, while at the same time promoting water safety and community health but providing free or low-cost swim lessons to children, and introducing swimming to low-income and minority youth communities.
