UAF is a community that welcomes students from all over the world. Whether you’re just starting college or transferring from a university overseas, we are here to help you succeed in your education and get the most out of your experience in Alaska.

At UAF, all the resources of a large research university are at your doorstep. But you also get the personal advising experience only a small college can offer. We’re here to help you with everything from filing immigration documents to getting acclimated to your new home. You’ll get to know our international student advising staff by name, and trust that you can rely on expert guidance when you need it.

UAF is a world leader in climate change and Arctic research. We offer opportunities for field-based learning and research you won’t find anywhere else on Earth, in wide-ranging academic areas ranging from engineering to archaeology, and business to the arts. Learn more about the experience at UAF.

At our Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska, you’ll have the opportunity to study in one of the most culturally varied cities in America, at the nation’s northernmost Land, Sea and Space Grant institution. You’ll also find a strong sense of community, at a university that feels more like a family. It’s one of the reasons that Times Higher Education recently ranked UAF #10 among the world’s best small universities.

There’s also plenty to explore nearby. Our 2,250 acre Troth Yeddha' campus has two lakes and miles of hiking trails. We have some of the best facilities in Alaska for indoor and outdoor recreation. Other attractions, such as the UA Museum of the North, the Geophysical Institute, the International Arctic Research Center, and the Poker Flat Research Range bring scholars and researchers from around the world. Check out this visitor’s guide to Fairbanks and UAF.

Are you an international student who is looking to enter a university for the first time, start a new graduate degree or permanently transfer to UAF?

To start your adventure at UAF, your first step will be to apply for admission. We offer a fast and convenient online application. The admission qualifications for international applicants are the same as domestic applicants with the addition of providing Proof of English Proficiency and an Official diploma for institutions that do not list a degree and graduation date on the transcript. English proficiency can be proven by earning minimum scores on one of the following four tests: TOEFL score of 79, IELTS score of 6.5, PTE (Pearson Test of English) score of 55, DET (DuoLingo English Test) score of 110 (undergraduate) or 120 (graduate). Requests for exceptions to this policy may be submitted via email to the Office of Admissions.

In order to issue your immigration documents, we must receive the UAF Financial Statement for International Students (PDF) and supporting documentation. We’ll also need a copy of your passport identification page, permanent resident address outside the U.S. and city of birth confirmation.
