University of Alaska Fairbanks History
A bill signed by Alaska Territorial Gov. John Strong led to the start of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, today's University of Alaska. The college opened in 1922 with 7 faculty members and 6 students, which eventually grew to 15 by the end of the academic year. It played a key role in the Statehood movement of the 1950s. By 1981, enrollment reached 5,000 students. In 1991, NASA named UAF a Space Grant institution for Aerospace research.
