University of Barcelona History

The Universitat De Barcelona officially opened its doors in the year 1450, after King Alfonso V issued the charter for the establishment of an institution that would offer courses in Civil and Canonical Law, Philosophy, Medicine, Theology, Liberal Arts, and Science. The Barcelona University Campus was established in 1539; however, it had to be shut down in 1714, after the end of the War of Succession. It shifted its base to Cereva and operated as the University of Cereva until it was re-established in the city of Barcelona in 1837. The following decades saw it expand and be considered alongside the best universities in Europe and globally.
