History
The University of Mary Hardin Baylor’s history began when Texas was yet to gain statehood and the Baptist Missionary work had just begun in the frontier Republic. Multiple leaders inspired the want for a Christian education in the area. The Union Association organized a meeting in 1841 to form an education society. Soon, in 1845 Tryon and Baylor were appointed for the establishment of a Baptist university. On February 1, 1845, the Baptist University came into existence. In 1851, a male and female department was created where the female department obtained its own charter and board of trustees. Later, in 1886 the male department consolidated with Waco University located in Waco, Texas, and gained the name Baylor University. On the other hand, the Female Department relocated to Belton, Texas.
