About University of Massachusetts, Boston

The roots of the University of Massachusetts (UMass) System stretch back to the establishment of the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1863, under the Morrill Land-Grant Acts. However, prior to the emergence of UMass Boston, the Amherst campus stood as the sole public, comprehensive university in the state. Despite the state's historical underinvestment in higher education, efforts to expand UMass into Boston faced resistance from faculty, administrators at the Amherst campus, and private colleges in the area.

In response to the overwhelming demand for higher education opportunities in the Greater Boston area, the UMass System saw its first expansion to Worcester in 1962 with the creation of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. President John W. Lederle's advocacy for a commuter campus in Boston, citing the denial of admission to thousands of qualified applicants due to lack of space, catalyzed the establishment of UMass Boston in 1964. Despite opposition from various quarters, including private institutions and existing public colleges in Boston, the idea of a new campus gained traction, fueled by widespread support in the media and public opinion.

UMass Boston emerged as a pivotal addition to the UMass System, becoming the state's only public research institution in Boston. With a student body of approximately 16,000, including over 2,000 international students from diverse backgrounds, the campus offers a robust academic environment. Offering a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs, UMass Boston maintains a selective admission policy, requiring prospective students to meet rigorous academic standards, reflective of its commitment to academic excellence and inclusivity.
