History
It opened under the name Blount College, an institution that offered seminary-based courses at just USD 8 per session, under the leadership of Founder, James White and President Rev. Samuel Carrick. It got renamed to East Tennessee College in 1807, just before its financial struggles began and eventual closure, until 1820.
It reopened under Rev. David Sherman and went through a period of growth and expansion. The passing of the Morrill Act in 1862 led to it becoming a land-grant institution, one that offered agricultural and mechanical education to students. In 1879, it took over its current name. The following years saw it expand further and merge with the University of Chattanooga.
