The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, now The University of Texas at El Paso, opened its doors Sept. 23, 1914, with buildings located on present-day Fort Bliss. A fire destroyed the campus in 1916 and the University moved to its current location.
“Mining Minds” is a steel sculpture installed in 2010 to enhance The University of Texas at El Paso campus and celebrate our mining heritage through the iconic pickaxe head. At night, lights illuminate the structure, while LEDs emanate from the perforated ones and zeroes at each end of the pick.On special occasions, including historic dates, major annual milestones and to celebrate special accomplishments, the pick is illuminated in blue and orange.
