History

The founding year of the UWA is 1951, after a decade of which, the division evolved into the University of New South Wales' Wollongong College. The New South Wales Legislature officially recognized the university as a separate entity. UOW celebrated 40 years of independence in 2015. The Wollongong Institute of Higher Education, was founded in 1962 as the Wollongong Teachers' College, and merged with the University in 1982. The Wollongong University was established as an independent university by legislation and was approved in 1975.
